Himalayan Pollinator Patrol

Join the Himalayan Pollinator Patrol and become a citizen scientist! Help us monitor and protect vital pollinator species across Nepal and the Himalayan region.

Discover pollinators. Document biodiversity. Contribute to conservation.

Welcome to the Himalayan Pollinator Patrol, a citizen science initiative dedicated to the conservation and study of pollinators across Nepal and the Himalayan region. Explore the diversity of pollinators in Nepal and help us understand where they occur. Whether you’re in your garden, village, farmland or forest, your observations can contribute to biodiversity knowledge.

Your first observation starts here

No scientific training or species-identification skills required. Just observe, photograph and share what you find.

About Us

The Himalayan Pollinator Patrol is a project by the Nature Conservation and Study Centre (NCSC), aimed at engaging communities in the monitoring and protection of pollinators. Our program empowers citizen scientists to observe, document, and report pollinator activity, contributing to valuable research and conservation efforts.

Why Pollinators Matter

Pollinators play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and ensuring the health of ecosystems. They are responsible for the reproduction of over 75% of flowering plants and crops, making them essential for food security and agricultural sustainability. However, pollinators are facing significant threats due to habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use. By understanding and protecting these species, we can help preserve our natural heritage and support global food systems.

How to Participate in Himalayan Pollinator Patrol

Become a Citizen Scientist

You don’t need to be a scientist to contribute to science! Whether you’re a student, nature enthusiast, farmer, photographer or simply curious about the living world around you, you can help us document pollinator diversity in Nepal.

All you need is curiosity, a little time and a way to record what you observe.

1. What is iNaturalist?

iNaturalist is a free platform that helps people observe and document biodiversity. You can upload photographs of living organisms, record where and when you encountered them, and receive suggestions to help identify what you found.

Scientists and other nature enthusiasts can also help improve identifications. You don’t need to know the scientific name of a species before making an observation.

Through Himalayan Pollinator Patrol, your observations can help us build a better understanding of pollinator diversity and distribution across Nepal.

2. Get started with iNaturalist

Using a smartphone?

You can also use iNaturalist on the web.

Create a free account and sign in. Once you’re ready, join the Himalayan Pollinator Patrol project.

3. Observe, photograph and record

You do not need to identify the organism to species level yourself. A clear photograph and reliable observation details are valuable starting points.

4. Make sure your observation contributes to Pollinator Patrol

After recording your observation, follow these steps:

  1. Join the Himalayan Pollinator Patrol project on iNaturalist.
  2. Follow the project’s instructions for adding observations.
  3. Check the project page to see whether your observation has been included.

Joining the project and uploading an observation are not necessarily the same action. If your observation does not appear in the project, check the project instructions or contact NCSC for assistance.

5. Can’t use iNaturalist?

You can still contribute to Himalayan Pollinator Patrol using our alternative data-submission method.

Download the Pollinator Data Sheet from this page, record your observations as instructed, and submit the completed sheet to NCSC through the designated submission method.

Every observation counts

Your observation might come from your home garden, a flowering plant beside a road, a farm in your village or a trail through a forest. Each record can contribute to a broader understanding of Nepal’s pollinators.

Observe. Record. Contribute. Help conserve pollinator diversity in Nepal.

Data Submission

You can submit your data using two methods:

  1. iNaturalist: Use the iNaturalist app to upload your observations directly from your smartphone to our project Himalayan Pollinator Patrol.
  2. Data Sheet: Download our Pollinator Data Sheet and fill it out during your observation sessions. You can then submit the completed data sheet through our website or email it to info@ncsc.org.np .

Both methods help us compile accurate and comprehensive data on pollinator activity in the Himalayan region.

Our Impact

The Himalayan Pollinator Patrol aims to engage citizen scientists, collect observations, and contributed to research projects aimed at understanding and protecting pollinators. Your participation helps us:

  • Monitor pollinator populations and health.
  • Identify key habitats and threats.
  • Inform policy and conservation strategies.
  • Open database on pollinators of Nepal
