Protecting Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale’s Orchids

A Community-Led Conservation Initiative

Our Mission

The Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale (TMJ) region in Nepal’s eastern midhills is a biodiversity treasure, home to 24 orchid species—including the critically endangered Dactylorhiza hatagirea and two endemics. These orchids sustain pollinators, hold cultural significance, and support local livelihoods. Yet, they face extinction due to illegal harvesting and habitat loss. 800+ tons of orchids are smuggled to India from eastern Nepal.

We unite science and community action to safeguard TMJ’s orchids through research, education, and youth leadership.

Our Approach

1. Community Science

  • Train Community Forest User Groups (CFUGs) and youths to document orchids, threats, and habitats.
  • Build Nepal’s first comprehensive orchid database for TMJ.

2. Education & Awareness

  • Workshops for locals and schools on orchid ecology and legal protections.
  • Photo exhibitions and local-language materials to inspire conservation.

3. Empowering Local Leaders

  • Engage youth and Indigenous groups as researchers and educators.
  • Highlight traditional knowledge alongside science.

Progress So Far

✅ First Workshop Conducted!

  • Shared orchid species knowledge with CFUGs.
  • Discussed ecological/cultural importance and threats.

Goals

  • Publish a TMJ Orchid Guide for communities and policymakers.
  • Map orchid hotspots to target conservation efforts.
  • Train 20+ youths as conservation leaders.
  • Educate 100+ students through school camps.
