Making a Splash for Conservation on World Otter Day 2025

We recently partnered with Research Association Hattisar (RAH) and several other organizations to celebrate World Otter Day on May 27, 2025. Our goal was to get young people excited about saving these vital river species.

The event took place at Nobel Academy in Dharan-11 and was specifically designed for students in grades 8, 9, and 10.

Here’s how we spent the day:

  • Interactive Presentation: We kicked off the day with a multimedia presentation. Students learned about the three otter species found in Nepal (Eurasian, Smooth-coated, and Asian Small-clawed), their crucial role as indicators of healthy rivers, and the major threats they face, like pollution and habitat loss. The students asked sharp questions, showing real curiosity about wildlife conservation.
  • Otter-Themed Face Painting: To make the conservation message memorable, we had an otter-themed face painting activity. Over 38 students participated, getting playful otter and water designs painted on their faces. It was a great way to visually express support for conservation.
  • Coloring Competition: We also held a coloring competition where students used their creativity to color sketches of otters in natural settings. This encouraged them to apply what they learned in the presentation to their art. Winners received eco-friendly prizes.

The Impact

The campaign successfully combined education with fun, hands-on activities, ensuring that 38 students were actively engaged. The blend of science communication and art created a memorable experience, wrapping up with a group reflection where students discussed how they can personally help protect local waterways and biodiversity.

A huge thank you to Nobel Academy and all our partners for helping us keep the message flowing: Otters need clean rivers—let’s keep them flowing!
