On June 8, 2026, the Nature Conservation and Study Centre (NCSC), in collaboration with 5 key partner organizations—including the Research Association Hattisar, Central Campus of Technology, and the International Otter Survival Fund (IOSF)—celebrated World Otter Day 2026 by conducting an interactive school awareness program at Dharan Model School in Dharan-15, Sunsari.
Supported by 13 dedicated volunteers, the program directly reached over 40 Grade 9 and 10 students and teachers to highlight the importance of otter conservation and healthy freshwater ecosystems.
Highlights of the Event
- Interactive Educational Presentation: Students were introduced to otter species ecology, geographical distribution, and their crucial role as bioindicators of healthy wetland ecosystems. The talk also examined the primary threats otters face—such as habitat destruction, water pollution, and illegal poaching—followed by an engaging Q&A session on local freshwater conservation challenges.
- Face Painting Activity: To foster a fun and memorable connection with wildlife, volunteers painted students’ faces with otter whiskers, paw prints, and aquatic nature motifs.
- Art & Coloring Competition: A hands-on coloring competition allowed students to study the physical adaptations of otters—such as their sleek bodies, webbed feet, and thick fur—while depicting them in their natural river habitats. The session concluded with an evaluation where four winners received special prizes.
Impact & Moving Forward
By linking scientific knowledge with creative arts, the World Otter Day celebration empowered local youth to become active advocates for otter protection and wetland preservation across eastern Nepal.
